My thoughts have been with an old classmate from high school who lay dying this week. I have felt unaccountably haunted and sad. I say unaccountably because we were not close friends, yet I felt a connection to her. After Lula called me last night and told me that Helen had died, I went in my studio and sat down at the piano and just let my fingers wander over the keys without direction, letting my emotions take over. I played this little piece a couple of times and turned on the recorder. This small musical gift, for I felt that it was a gift, encapsulates my sadness at having already lost so many friends and family: Patti, Jarrett, Esther, Mother and Daddy, and Uncle Harry, Jimmy, and yesterday, Helen.

I keep going back to the guestbook page on my website, www.dogwooddaughter.com, and reading what Helen wrote just a few months ago about running out of time . She ran out of time yesterday.
